Suppliers I Use
I am very conscious of my everyday impact on the environment and try whenever I can to be as eco friendly as possible through the use of recycled materials.
'Make do and mend' and 'reduce reuse recycle' are ideals that flow through my business, not only in the materials I use to produce my work, but also in the way it is packaged and presented.
All my packaging materials are biodegradable, recyclable and eco friendly. I save and re-use bubble wrap and padded envelopes to package up orders whenever possible. If an item requires gift wrapping, I tap into my vast collection of paper ephemera and use something appropriate for the gift in question, perhpaps a sheet of vintage music or an old map. I do use gift boxes to package my jewellery and these are all made from 100% recycled card and materials.
Before the launch of Eco Silver in this country by Cooksongold, I adapted my designs so that I used the minimal amount of new silver I possibly could within a piece. Despite now using Eco Silver, I still stick to these original principles. Most of my jewellery is made from recycled silver now, including Eco Silver, but predominantly British Hallmarked antique silverware. I have phased out the use of new silver, although this is something I won't be able to do completely as I still buy in finished sterling silver chain which is not recycled.
I'm gradually reducing the amount of chemicals in my studio and have ditched my acid pickle solution for a more eco friendly vinegar/salt solution. I often use eggs to oxidise my metals rather than chemicals too. Sounds odd but it works! Rather than use toxic chemicals to etch my metals I'm currently experimenting and perfecting a process of electro-etching using a simple salt solution and rechargeable batteries but tempted to experiment with potato power too.
I also work with reclaimed copper pipes salvaged from our own home renovations and I will hopefully be introducing recycled brass to my repertoire quite soon too.
All my stationery products are made using 100% recycled card stock, paper etc and my stationery items are packaged in 100% biodegradable bags.
Having these policies in place means that I can incorporate my own values into my business. They also mean that when you buy from Milomade you acquire something not just unique and beautiful but something that leaves neither damage nor waste in its wake.
